Music
Welcome to the Music section. I'm one of those obsessive music collectors - my album collection is large, numbering over a thousand now-a-days. With the advent of broadband internet and cheap downloads, it's probably doubled, tripled even.
My tastes are fairly wide-ranging and varied. I tend to baulk at 'scene' types who are loyal to particular genres or ideologies. That said, there are certainly things that I have come to privilege over the years. I listen to pop albums as much for the lyrics as for the music and so I tend to value strong songwriting and substance over style. Because of this, I spend a lot of time listening to singer/ songwriters, Bob Dylan, obviously, but also Randy Newman, Neil Young, David Ackles, Nick Drake, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen, Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor. However, I maintain strong 'sidelines' in British Rock, Hip-hop and the Delta Blues of the 1930s with more than a passing interest in baroque pop, post-punk/ new wave and prog/ art rock. That, more or less, sums up the types of artists that make up my collection. As a rule: I value stripped down economy over elaborate or over-complicated production - but there are many exceptions to that rule.
